One Spam Solution: Go After the Advertisers...
I have believed for a long time that efforts to go after many of the individual spammers out there are doomed to failure, because the spam originates in many cases outside of any jurisdiction where the spammers can be prosecuted, and because spammers have such agility as to what servers they use. So sensibly enough, I (and I have a lot of company here) believe that efforts to eradicate spam should focus on the companies, products and services being advertised in the spam. A new article on MSNBC discusses who ultimately benefits from spam and it comes as no surprise (especially to anyone who has received a Gevalia Kaffe spam message) that there are a lot of otherwise-legitimate businesses profiting from spam, and a lot of ISPs profiting from facilitation of spam as well. Well written, well researched and and very thought-provoking. [Link seen on the J-Walk Blog]
